Little choices will make a big difference this Christmas – Deo

The Founder of Pacific Recycling Foundation, Mr. Amitesh Deo is urging Fijians to make this Christmas greener by taking small and sustainable actions in their homes and communities.

He said the little choices will make a big difference.

Mr. Deo who is also the CEO of Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited said we can think about using reusable or eco-friendly gift-wrapping methods.

“Many will purchase new appliances and homeware during this period, but this does not mean the old ones have to end up at dumpsites or in our waterways. Unused or non-working appliances can be brought to our yards in Lami and Lautoka for recycling,” said Mr. Deo.

He said as we close this year, we also need to make reflections on our actions and decisions towards the environment and whether we as a country have done enough to achieve sustainable policies and practices when it comes to waste management.

“The lack of civic pride towards waste management and recycling is still a major concern and this only goes to show that we have a lot to achieve as a nation. Through our advocacy programs and specially tailored recycling projects, PRF and WRFL are working tirelessly with their partners to change behaviour and mindsets and inculcate best practices of waste management,” said Mr. Deo.

Mr. Deo said he also wants to thank all their partners in the recycling space, as without strong partnerships, some major accomplishments would not have been possible this year.

PRF’s Founder added that it is also a time to put smiles on the faces of our children and assist those who are less fortunate, homeless and marginalized adding that they work very closely with grassroots communities, particularly those who are engaged in informal waste picking.

“While we indulge in merry-making, let us also acknowledge and recognise the significant contribution of communities involved in informal waste picking. Their empowering efforts are not only increasing the capacity of landfills and dumpsites but also helps in reducing pollution. Unfortunately, we often find that their work and voices go unnoticed,” stated Mr. Deo.

He said such communities are role models and deserve a special mention for their perseverance.
