Cleanup on Koronivia Road Highlights Urgent Need for Responsible Waste Management

Troubling lack of accountability among travelers and residents alike - Deo

A total of 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables were collected during a cleanup campaign along Koronivia Road in Nausori, organised by Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) in partnership with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited (WRFL), Malhana Cloud Kitchen, Koronivia Business Council (KBC), and residents on Friday, 9th August.

This area has been plagued by significant amounts of general waste being irresponsibly dumped along the roadside and into drains, threatening the environment and community health.

The cleanup effort began at the Koronivia Roundabout and extended to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive.

The Founder of PRF, Amitesh Deo emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in waste management.

“The amount of waste we collected in just two hours highlights the urgent need for everyone to move away from the throwaway culture and take responsibility for their waste. We must all commit to keeping Koronivia clean and green for future generations.”

The cleanup uncovered a significant amount of household waste and recyclables, such as baby diapers, PET bottles, construction waste, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and cartons full of unused items. These items were found clogging drains following recent grass-cutting by the Fiji Roads Authority along the roadside.

Deo said it is unfortunate that their teams had to leave some waste behind because they were unable to access the soggy drains due to the potential dangers of harmful objects that could injure those involved in the cleanup.

A total of 596 kilograms of unsorted waste was collected, comprising 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminium cans.

Deo said this significant amount highlights an increase in waste disposal in the area compared to previous cleanup campaigns, underscoring a troubling lack of accountability among travellers and residents alike.

“This is not just about cleaning up waste; it’s about changing mindsets. We call on every individual to reflect on their habits and make conscious choices that support our environment,” said Deo.

PRF extends its gratitude to the Fiji Police Force for their assistance in ensuring the safety and smooth flow of traffic during the campaign.
