Fiji Day Message: PRF Calls for a Nation Built on Environmental Resilience

There is no greater act of patriotism than protecting the land and ocean that define the nation’s identity - Deo

As Fiji celebrates 55 years of independence, Pacific Recycling Foundation is reminding Fijians that true resilience as a nation begins with protecting the environment that sustains us.

PRF Founder Amitesh Deo said the strength of a country lies not only in its people and economy, but also in the health of its natural environment.

“A healthy environment is the foundation of our nation’s resilience and strength. When our land is healthy, our people thrive,” said Deo.

“The story of Fiji’s progress must also be the story of how we care for our environment and the people whose livelihoods are closely connected to it.”

PRF continues to advocate for inclusive and people-centred recycling systems, placing emphasis on recognising and empowering the Collection Pillars of Recycling-individuals from the informal sector who play a crucial role in the recovery of recyclables and environmental protection.

Through initiatives such as dignity facilities for the CPR at Vunato and Maururu dumpsites, recycling programs in various sectors with a ‘Look Beyond Movement Approach’, and the ‘Lase Vou’ initiative within the tourism sector, PRF is demonstrating how sustainable waste management can go hand in hand with social empowerment and economic opportunity.

“Environmental stewardship and economic growth are not opposing forces,” said Deo.

“A clean and well-managed environment can drive a green economy, one that uplifts communities and secures Fiji’s future.”

He added that as Fiji marks another year of independence, there is no greater act of patriotism than protecting the land and ocean that define the nation’s identity.

“This Fiji Day, let us renew our commitment to building a cleaner, more resilient Fiji,” said Deo.

“When we choose to protect our environment, we are safeguarding the future of our children and strengthening the very foundation of our nation.”

Deo stressed that a resilient Fiji is one where environmental care and responsibility, social dignity, and national pride move forward together.

This Fiji Day, PRF calls on all Fijians, businesses, and leaders to reaffirm their commitment to responsible waste management, recycling, and environmental action, as acts of patriotism and love for the nation.
