Tanoa Plaza Hotel Recognised for a Decade of Recycling Leadership in Suva
Pacific Recycling Foundation proudly recognises Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva for its leadership in sustainable practices and responsible waste management, setting a benchmark for urban hotels across Fiji and the Pacific.
As one of the pioneers in recycling in Suva, Tanoa Plaza Hotel has diverted approximately 32 tonnes of recyclables from the Naboro landfill over the past 10 years through its partnership with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited. By effectively segregating recyclables and ensuring they are properly managed for recycling, the hotel has demonstrated leadership in environmental responsibility and set a strong example for other hotels across Fiji and the Pacific.
“Tanoa Plaza Hotel has shown that even urban hotels can make a significant difference in waste management and environmental sustainability,” said Amitesh Deo, Founder of Pacific Recycling Foundation.
“Through their long-term commitment to recycling and other sustainable practices, they are not only reducing waste but also inspiring other businesses and communities to take meaningful action for the environment,” said Deo.
Tanoa Plaza Hotel has implemented other practical sustainability initiatives that reflect genuine care for the environment. The hotel has introduced a garden-to-table approach, using its limited garden space to grow fresh produce for its menus, advocating healthier and more sustainable dining. It has also reduced single-use plastics by replacing disposable water bottles in guest rooms with water dispensers on each floor, combining convenience for guests with meaningful waste reduction.
The hotel maintains effective waste sorting across its property, with visible bins in guest areas, conference spaces, and staff zones. This consistent practice not only ensures proper recycling but also reinforces environmental awareness among guests and staff, creating a ripple effect that encourages sustainable behaviors beyond the hotel premises.
Beyond WRFL’s recycling program, Tanoa Plaza Hotel has also partnered with PRF on several occasions to support programs that aim to increase awareness on recycling and provide structured support to Collection Pillars of Recycling – individuals who play a key role in Fiji’s recycling system.
Deo said these collaborations show that the hotel’s commitment goes beyond its own operations and actively contributes to strengthening the country’s broader recycling ecosystem.
The General Manager, Tanoa Plaza Hotel, Suva, Mere Rakoroi said they are delighted to partner with PRF and WRFL and are grateful for their guidance and support towards sustainable and responsible waste management.
“This journey begins with the Reddy Foundation – the platform through which Tanoa Hotels channels its environmental and community responsibilities, ensuring that sustainability commitments translate into meaningful, measurable action”, added Rakoroi.
