Two major national campaigns were attached to the 2023 Global Recycling Day

1.Wear a Pin – Support the Recycling Movement. The proceeds from the national pin campaign were diverted towards the recycling programs implemented by PRF. This will also allow PRF to expand its reach within Fiji in terms of outreach programs to outer islands and maritime areas that are most susceptible to the harmful effects of irresponsible disposal of recyclables, especially plastic.

2. PRF’s National Plastic Free Day Declaration on 18th March. The key message of March 18th being declared plastic free was for people to reflect on the use of plastic and how they are disposing plastic waste. It was also a day to create awareness of the harmful effects of plastic on our environment. Since the declaration, PRF has seen a marked increase in the number of enquiries from communities, schools, and corporates who want to implement our recycling initiatives to eradicate plastic waste.

This year’s Global Recycling Day was also significantly different for PRF as it signified a collaboration of true commitment, ethics, and a shared vision towards sustainability, recognition of recycling as a trade, and the human aspect of waste management.

In 2023, Global Recycling Day was celebrated at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Denarau. Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited partnered with Tourism Fiji, Swire Shipping, Pacific Energy, and Fiji National University to stage the celebrations in the Western Division. Pure Fiji, BSP Life, Asco Motors and R.C Manubhai came on board as support partners.

The Prime Minister, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka officiated on March 18th while the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Viliame Gavoka officiated on 17th March.

The two-day celebration included a Roundtable on Mindset and Behaviour towards Recycling.
