I Recycle Hub Program at Kilikali Settlement
Kilikali Settlement in Nasinu has become the second community in Fiji and the first informal settlement to implement the ‘I Recycle Hub’ program, a fundamental tool in terms of visible and practical participation in recycling.
The program has been launched in the settlement by the Pacific Recycling Foundation in partnership with Pacific Energy and Nasinu Town Council.
The 31-year-old settlement is home to 268 residents who moved from maritime and rural areas in search of job opportunities in the Central Division.
It is a humbling journey where the PRF, which is a rights-based organisation is able to take such a program to an informal settlement.
This project is part of the PRF’s “Look Beyond” movement-building approach where recycling and waste management solutions should be for everyone and not based on social status, skin colour, ethnicity, and so forth.
The implementation of the I Recycle Hub program is a strategic approach aimed at various layers of data collection, advocacy, and project sustainability and these strategic initiatives aim to provide national and regional blueprints for waste management while also supporting and empowering individuals participating in this space.
Through the support of organisations such as the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Fiji Cancer Society, and Consumer Council of Fiji, the Pacific Recycling Foundation was also able to provide a week-long training to 15 recycling advocates of Kilikali Settlement on best practices for recycling, human rights, gender-based violence, gender disparity, various forms of abuse, consumer rights and freedom, health issues, and access to basic health services as well as education on cancer.
As part of the PRF’s “Look Beyond” movement-building approach, the Foundation continues to have discussions with the recycling advocates of Kilikali Settlement on the social issues affecting the settlement with the aim of empowering the residents to look at possible solutions.
Kilikali Informal Settlement Recycling Advocates Receive A.M.M.A Award for 2023
Pacific Recycling Foundation is proud to announce that the recycling advocates of Kilikali Informal Settlement have received the Advocates Influencing Mindsets & Mentoring Agents (A.M.M.A) Award for 2023.
This award celebrates individuals and groups who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to recycling advocacy.
Kilikali Settlement in Nasinu is the first informal settlement to implement PRF’s ‘I Recycle Hub’ program, a fundamental tool in terms of visible and practical participation in recycling.
The program was launched in June last year in partnership with Pacific Energy and Nasinu Town Council.
Between June and December 2023, Kilikali Settlement’s recycling advocates led the collection of over 900 kilograms of recyclable materials, effectively preventing them from entering the environment and adding to pollution.
The 31-year-old settlement, home to 268 residents who migrated from maritime and rural areas in search of job opportunities, now stands as a beacon of sustainable practices in recycling advocacy.
PRF Founder, Mr. Amitesh Deo said they are immensely proud to honour the recycling advocates of Kilikali Informal Settlement for their exceptional commitment to recycling advocacy.
“The I Recycle Hub program is not just about recycling; it’s about empowerment and inclusivity. Through this initiative, we aim to break barriers and ensure that every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to contribute to a cleaner environment,” said Mr. Deo.
Pacific Energy Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Jullien Leraille said they are honoured to be part of such a transformative program.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to advocates of Kilikali Settlement, recipients of the PRF’s A.M.M.A Award 2023. Their passion and dedication exemplify the spirit of sustainability, and we are delighted to support their efforts in creating a positive impact within their community,” said Mr. Leraille.
