The I Recycle Hub is at the core of PRF’s advocacy message.

While most of PRF’s advocacy work focuses on changing attitude towards recycling and those involved in waste picking, the I Recycle Hub is a fundamental tool in terms of visible and practical participation in recycling.

Initially earmarked for hotels and resorts, the concept was rolled out in Jai Narayan College and a rural community setting in Kabutri Drive, Koronivia, both in the care of the users.  The I Recycle Hub program represents a unique concept that challenges the traditional views of recycling and aims to bring recycling to the very forefront of all operations.

The I- RECYCLE HUB bin concepts and designs have been developed by PRF/WRFL core team that hinges on over 28 years of experience and commitment in recycling.

These bins can withstand tropical weather conditions which is the main factor of wear and tear in our tropical climate.

The purpose of these bins is to also advocate for change in mindset and behaviour, signifying the importance of recycling.

The installation of these bins will additionally assist PRF in developing economic and social empowerment of women CRPs in Fiji (formerly known as informal waste pickers) , as well as influencing positive changes in recycling behaviour/attitude within communities.

The successful piloting of the I-Recycle Hub bins within Fiji’s CBD will aim to bring about the following:

  • Change in behaviour and mindset towards international best practices of recycling
  • Increased recycling participation
  • Reduced waste to landfill
  • Increased volumes of recyclables being collected or captured that will go through a proper recycling stream
  • With increased participation rates and volumes of recyclables being collected, the viability of setting up an upcycling plant in Fiji which will promote financial stability among waste pickers, primarily women and members of the LGBTQI+ community
  • Transition Collection Pillars of Recycling to more formal settings or into Green Jobs
  • Introducing a Community, Public Private Partnership approach for recyclables

The implementation of these bins is a strategic approach aimed at various layers of data collection, advocacy, and project sustainability. These strategic initiatives aim to provide national and regional blueprints for waste management while also supporting individuals participating in this space.
