Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort Implements WRFL’s “I Recycle” Program
Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort has become the first resort along the Coral Coast to implement Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited’s (WRFL) comprehensive “I Recycle” program, marking a significant step forward in Fiji’s sustainable tourism efforts.
Coinciding with the International Day for Biological Diversity, this launch underscores the vital connection between proper waste management and the protection of Fiji’s rich ecosystems. As biodiversity faces increasing threats from pollution and waste mismanagement, initiatives like these reinforce the “Do No Harm” principle – not only in safeguarding human well-being but also in preserving the environment and its delicate ecosystems.
By embedding strategic recycling efforts into its core operations, the resort is setting a powerful precedent for waste management in the hospitality sector. Building on its longstanding engagement with WRFL’s recycling initiatives, Outrigger is now strengthening its commitment to proper waste management through the full integration of the “I Recycle” program.
This enhancement moves beyond basic waste separation, establishing a more structured and impactful approach to waste management. Strengthening its recycling initiatives not only diverts waste from landfills and dumpsites but also actively shapes the future of responsible business practices within the hospitality industry.
This shift underscores Outrigger’s leadership in proper waste management, paving the way for other tourism establishments to follow suit and embrace meaningful environmental change.
WRFL has been working diligently to engage the tourism sector in proper waste management efforts, recognising its significant role in shaping Fiji’s environmental landscape.
The launch reflects a growing movement within Fiji’s tourism sector toward enhanced environmental responsibility, aligning with WRFL & Pacific Recycling Foundation’s (PRF) ongoing efforts to transform attitudes toward recycling and the Collection Pillars of Recycling.
This initiative is designed not only to improve waste management but also to drive meaningful engagement, build sustainable practices, and support data-driven advocacy efforts.
Outrigger General Manager Darren Shaw said that one of OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort’s most important initiatives is the comprehensive recycling program.
“We had implemented measures to reduce waste by sorting and recycling materials such as plastics, glass, and paper, and by doing so, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and conserving natural resources. With the I Recycle-Hub, this is the next step towards a more sustainable future and driving everyone to be part of the recycling program.”
“In recent times, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort continued to implement further initiatives such as the introduction of recycle bins in guest rooms and guest areas, our new Waimana bottling plant designed to minimise purchasing single-use plastic products, and our new On-Site bottle crusher”.
WRFL’s Director and CEO, Amitesh Deo, commended Outrigger’s commitment to sustainability.
“Outrigger’s leadership in responsible waste management sets an important example for Fiji’s tourism sector. The successful implementation of the ‘I Recycle’ program demonstrates the resort’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its willingness to drive meaningful change. We encourage other tourism establishments to follow suit and implement comprehensive recycling programs that will reduce landfill dependency and encourage responsible waste management practices for generations to come.”
