It is becoming increasingly important for carnival and event organisers to become more aware of their own carbon footprint and start adapting to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, said the Founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation and CEO of Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Mr. Amitesh Deo.
He stressed this while officiating at the Vodafone Tebara Carnival at Syria Park, Nausori on 14 September 2023.
Mr. Deo applauded the efforts of the organising committee of the Vodafone Tebara Carnival for strongly advocating for environmental sustainability at this year’s event by choosing the theme, “Clean and Healthy Environment – Beat Plastic Pollution.”
“It is refreshing to see that environment and recycling issues are becoming central themes of such events as opposed to an afterthought or a side discussion. We need efforts and partnerships like this to counter the serious issue of littering and improper waste management in the country.”
“I call on other event and carnival organisers to follow suit and adapt to sustainable practices and incorporate environmentally friendly themes and concepts, as such platforms can be very useful in educating our citizens on the best practices.”
He said Nausori Town and nearby areas that have seen greater population growth over the last two decades have also been affected by many social issues, particularly environmental problems associated with improper waste management.
The PRF Founder said they stand ready to partner with municipalities and organisers of such events to share and implement best practices that can bring about mindset and behaviour change in our citizens.
Mr. Deo said they are excited to be a part of this year’s Vodafone Tebara Carnival, in their efforts to educate people on the best practices of recycling.
