Close to 200kg of recyclables and general waste was collected during a clean-up of the Volivoli Beach in Ra, to mark World Clean Up Day.
Volivoli Beach, which is located close to a few hotels and resorts is a famous tourist attraction and a prominent picnic spot for locals.
The clean-up was organised by Suncoast Tourism Association, while Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited and Pacific Recycling Foundation provided training and logistical support.
Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited and Pacific Recycling Foundation Founder, Mr. Amitesh Deo said while continuing to partner with organisations for clean-up campaigns, they strongly believe there would be no need for clean-up campaigns if people take personal responsibility when it comes to waste management and recycling.
“There is a need for everyone to slowly move away from the idea of clean-up campaigns because it breeds the behaviour we are trying to change.”
He says we need to get away from the syndrome ‘I will just litter because someone else will pick it up’.
WRFL’s Business Development Manager, Mr. Prithvi Mishra provided training to around 20 people before the clean-up campaign regarding WRFL and PRF’s roles as well as basic information on recyclables, the need to segregate them at the source and properly dispose of them to ensure they can be recycled.
The recyclables captured during the clean-up campaign will be transported to the WRFL Yard in Lautoka for recycling purposes.
