The Pacific Recycling Foundation, in collaboration with its entrepreneurial arm, Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd (WRFL), has initiated a transformative journey to revolutionise waste management in Fiji with the opening of Day One of its Strategic Plan (2025-2029) ‘Walking the Talk – Connecting the Dots’ Stakeholder Consultation Workshop at the Suva Civic Centre.
Facilitated by Ecological Economist and PRF’s Strategic Plan lead consultant, Dr. Padma Lal, the two-day workshop aims to set the foundation for a multi-faceted approach to reshaping the waste management landscape, focusing on recycling and social justice for those involved in waste-picking.
Over 40 participants, including key partners, senior government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, and members of the private sector are attending the PRF’s two-day stakeholder workshop.
PRF Founder, Mr. Amitesh Deo, highlighted the workshop’s objective to collaborate with stakeholders in identifying practical waste management strategies, advocating behavioural change towards waste management and the environment, and ensuring social justice for those involved in waste-picking.
“Pacific Recycling Foundation is the voice of the nearly 30 years of struggle of waste management and recycling in Fiji. PRF is also the voice of those individuals engaged in waste picking. You see, nearly 30 years of walking the walk, we now have started talking about the work. By talking, I am referring to our advocacy for change,” said Mr. Deo.
The workshop is structured around achieving a sustainable environment and inclusive society in Fiji through PRF’s 6 Goals:
GOAL 1: ADVOCACY FOR CHANGE
GOAL 2: WALKING THE TALK
GOAL 3: SOCIAL WELL-BEING FOR THE COLLECTION PILLARS OF RECYCLING (CPR)
GOAL 4: WORKING TOGETHER FOR CHANGE
GOAL 5: GOOD GOVERNANCE
GOAL 6: REGIONAL COLLABORATION FOR INCREASED RECYCLING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE FOR CPR
Mr. Deo emphasised that the workshop outcomes, including practices and solutions, will be shared with neighbouring Pacific Island nations through strategic alliances and networking.
Mr. Deo also acknowledged PRF’s partners whose support has made this workshop possible.
“We sincerely thank Tourism Fiji, Swire Shipping, Pacific Energy, Fiji National University, Nestle, R.C Manubhai, and our host for the workshop, Suva City Council”, said Mr. Deo.
The opening of the workshop was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Education, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Honorable Viliame Gavoka.
