Relaunch of I-Recycle Program at Bykeitou Settlement, Nadera

Relaunch of I-Recycle Program at Bykeitou Settlement, Nadera

Over 300 residents of Bykeitou Informal Settlement in Nadera, Nasinu, are once again embracing community-led recycling through the relaunch of the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s I-Recycle Program, in partnership with Pacific Energy and Nasinu Town Council.

Originally implemented in 2023 under a grant program, the initiative provided vital recycling infrastructure to a community long without access to formal waste systems. Following the grant’s conclusion in early 2025, the program has now been revived by PRF with renewed momentum, supported by Pacific Energy, and strengthened through continued coordination with the Nasinu Town Council.

Residents of Bykeitou Settlement, a 60-year-old community lacking formal waste management services, have historically relied on dumping and burning household waste near a creek, contributing to environmental degradation and public health risks.

The relaunch of the I-Recycle program marks a transformative shift toward proper waste segregation and recycling practices, empowering communities at the frontline of climate vulnerability.

“This is more than just a relaunch, it is a reminder of our promise to make recycling accessible for everyone,” said Amitesh Deo, Founder of PRF and CEO of Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd.

“Bykeitou represents the communities we serve, those who are often overlooked but deserve real, lasting solutions. We are grateful to Pacific Energy and Nasinu Town Council for working alongside us to make this happen,” said Deo.

Pacific Energy CEO Mr. Stephane Cadel said, Bykeitou’s I Recycle program is more than just a recycling initiative – it is a renewed commitment to changing mindsets and behaviour through responsible recycling.

“This project reflects our goal to raise awareness, educate, and empower communities while addressing the critical issue of waste management,” said Cadel.

Pacific Energy’s continued partnership with PRF reflects a shared commitment to equity and empowerment in recycling. Through its renewed support, Pacific Energy strengthens PRF’s ‘Look Beyond Movement’ approach, centering underserved communities like Bykeitou and supporting practical, respectful solutions that honour dignity and long-term resilience.

The Executive Chairman, Special Administrator of Nasinu Town Council, Mr. Felix Magnus was the Chief Guest at the relaunch event.
