Pacific Recycling Foundation in partnership with The International Union for Conservation of Nature is carrying out a feasibility study on the ‘Hub and Spoke’ approach.
The idea is to develop a system through which recyclables will be transported from remote and maritime areas to a central point and then sent to upcycling facilities.
The objective is to outline strategies to fill recycling gaps in areas away from the main recycling centers in Viti Levu by operationalising a Hub and Spoke recycling system and developing recommendations for implementing a recycling system as a means of increasing rural recycling participation.
The project is in the implementation stages and will address waste management practices in outer islands.
The 9 sites of interest are Nabouwalu, Seaqaqa, Labasa, Savusavu, Lomaloma, Lakeba, Somosomo, Vunisea, and Rotuma.
An external consultant is carrying out consultancy work with PRF.
