Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited and Pacific Recycling Foundation provided training and logistical support during a clean-up campaign in Nausori today, which was organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
More than 100 people took part in this initiative which commenced in Nakasi and finished at the Waila Junction.
Over 300kg of recyclables were collected during this exercise.
WRFL CEO and PRF’s Founder, Mr. Amitesh Deo said their staff gave information to the volunteers regarding recyclables and the need to segregate waste materials.
Mr. Deo said while they are grateful to all the volunteers for their commitment in this drive today, there is a need for us to slowly move away from the idea of clean-up campaigns because it breeds the very behaviour they are trying to change.
“Clean-up campaigns lull people into a false sense of the ‘I will just litter because someone else will pick it up” syndrome,” said Mr. Deo.
He said as recycling advocates, they believe there would be no need for clean-up campaigns if we all took personal responsibility when it comes to waste management and recycling.
The recyclables collected during the clean-up campaign today have been transported to WRFL Yard in Lami for recycling.
